In Brief
The Body Perfumery's soaps are handcrafted from scratch in small batches using 100% vegetable oils and butters. They contain no detergents, preservatives or animal fats. All gentle on the skin, rich lathering and heavenly scented.
What's in Our Soap?
We use a variety of food-grade oils in our soaps, such as olive, palm, palm kernel, coconut, rice bran, sesame, castor, along with nourishing additives such as shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter, honey, milk and silk.
Will Your Soap Dry My Skin?
No. Our soaps will not dry your skin out because they are full of natural glycerin that attracts moisture to your skin. Unlike mass-produced commercial soaps, no glycerin is extracted from our soaps to be resold as other products. Every drop of glycerin produced from the soapmaking process is retained in our finished soaps.
The Skinny on Superfatting
Your skin will be happy with our soap for another reason: Superfatting. Superfatting is the addition of oils that exceed the amount needed to react with the alkali to form soap. Our soaps are superfatted at a relatively high percentage, from 7-8%. Most handmade soaps on the market are superfatted from 3-5%.
Bottom line? We want your skin to feel better coming out of the shower than going in. That's why we formulate our soap so that 7-8% of the skin nourishing oils and butters remain unsaponified.
How are your soaps finished and packaged?
After cutting, each soap is lightly trimmed by hand to cut off rough edges. Trimming is kept to a minimum to preserve the handmade quality of our soaps. No regimented ruler-straight machine-made lines here!
Each soap has its own unique pattern of color and texture. Sometimes, the soaps are also finished with a stamp or a dusting of mica for some shimmer. After trimming, the soaps are cured to allow for the evaporation of the water remaining from the saponification process, and then shrinkwrapped or bagged for sale.
Each soap comes with a name card containing a listing of ingredients, storage instructions, a batch number and a brief description of the scent.
How Big Are Your Soaps?
Our soaps range from 4.5 oz to 5 oz, and usually weighs in at approximately 4.75 oz at the time of packing.
Which Soapmaking Method Do You Use?
Our soaps are made using both the cold process and hot process methods. Cold process, or "CP", is "cold" because the saponification process occurs without any added heat by the soapmaker. Hot process, or "HP", is "hot" because the alkali/fat mixture is actively heated by the soapmaker to create soap. While modern soapmaking processes have come a long way since the pioneer days of making soap in a big cauldron over the fire, hot process is a descendant of that soapmaking method.
